Computer equipment at the Cyclotron lab

Experimental nuclear research requires computer-based data-acquisition systems. Computers used in such a context differs from other computers in several ways, the most important being that both hardware and software must support real-time applications.

Currently, the data acquisition system at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory may be divided into two major components:

Further details are here.

Our main computer, lynx.uio.no, is a Sun Sparcstation 10MP-512 with:

Additionally, we have a second and faster computer, cheetah.uio.no, a Sun UltraSparc 2 Creator, working in close coupling with the above. It is intended for the more CPU- and memory-intensive tasks, and has:

Our machines share the following X-terminal resources:

Physically, the main computer with its additional SCSI devices looks like this .

lynx.uio.no used to run the NCSA httpd WWW server. But currently we are using the Apache httpd. The reason is partly claims of higher speed, partly the enhancements in redirect, access control and status surveillance facilities. Server statistics are available.

We mirror the Apache httpd manual.
