Computer equipment at the Cyclotron lab
Experimental nuclear research requires computer-based data-acquisition
systems. Computers used in such a context differs from other computers
in several ways, the most important being that both hardware and
software must support real-time
applications.
Currently, the data acquisition system at the Oslo Cyclotron
Laboratory may be divided into two major components:
- A front-end system responsible for data digitalization,
read-out and formatting. This system is based on a VMEbus
modular computer with connections to CAMAC and NIM devices.
- A rear-end system consisting of a Sun Sparcstation with a separate
hardware interface (from Bit 3 Corporation) to the front-end VMEbus.
Further details are here.
Our main computer, lynx.uio.no,
is
a Sun Sparcstation 10MP-512 with:
- Solaris 2.5.1 operating system (UNIX System V Release 4.0),
OpenWindows, X-windows, Motif 1.2
- Dual SuperSPARC TMS390Z55 50MHz CPU with 36kB cache, 144 MB memory
- 1 x SCSI mass storage expansion box
- 1 x 1.0 GB disk drive
- 1 x 2.0 GB disk drive
- 1 x 9.0 GB disk drive
- 1 x 18.0 GB disk drive
- 1 x Colour monitor, 19", 1152 x 900 pixels
- 1 x Ethernet controller, TCP/IP and NFS software
- 1 x Bit 3 VME interface
- 2 x 10 GB Exabyte cartridge tape unit
- 1 x Panasonic SCSI CDROM unit
- 1 x SparcPrinter QA-6 laserprinter
- 1 x Hewlett Packard HP890c color inkjet printer
Additionally, we have a second and faster computer, cheetah.uio.no,
a Sun UltraSparc 2 Creator, working in close
coupling with the above. It is intended for the more CPU- and
memory-intensive tasks, and has:
- Solaris 2.7 operating system (UNIX System V Release 4.0),
OpenWindows, X-windows, Motif 1.2
- Dual UltraSPARC 200MHz CPU, 448 MB memory
- 1 x 2.0 GB disk drive
- 1 x 9.0 GB disk drive
- 1 x 17.0 GB disk drive
- 1 x Colour monitor, 20", 1280 x 1024 pixels
- 1 x Ethernet controller, TCP/IP and NFS software
- 2 x 10 GB Exabyte cartridge tape unit
Our machines share the following X-terminal resources:
- 5 x NCD 19c X-terminals, colour monitor, 19", 1280 x 1024 pixels
- 2 x NCD Xplora Pro X-terminals, colour monitor, 20", 1280 x 1024 pixels
- 2 x Tandberg TDV6330F X-terminal, colour monitor, 17", 1024 x 768 pixels
- 1 x Tandberg TDV6230 X-terminal, monochrome monitor, 17", 1024 x 768 pixels
Physically, the main computer with its additional SCSI devices
looks like this .
lynx.uio.no used to run the
NCSA httpd WWW server.
But currently we are using the
Apache httpd.
The reason is partly claims of higher speed, partly the enhancements
in redirect, access control and status surveillance facilities.
Server statistics are available.
We mirror the Apache httpd manual.
