Issue 19, Autumn 1993
The Russian Federation has set an export quota of 2,800 a year of the Eurasian lynx
Lynx lynx. The quota does not apply to other members of the Commonwealth of
Independent States, many of which prohibit capture and trade in lynx.
China has set a quota of 1,000 lynx a year.
The quotas were announced in notifications 741 and 745 by the CITES Secretariat dated 7 May.
Little is known of the lynx populations in Russia and China and there are fears that
extensive poaching and illegal trade is going on as a result of the confusion after
the demise of the USSR.
